Cet \u00e9change est r\u00e9gul\u00e9 par les conditions hygrom\u00e9triques de l\u2019air comme la temp\u00e9rature, l\u2019humidit\u00e9 relative et la pression atmosph\u00e9rique. Ainsi, pour un climat donn\u00e9, il y a un \u00e9quilibre o\u00f9 le bois n\u2019est ni en absorption, ni en d\u00e9sorption. C\u2019est ce qu\u2019on appelle la teneur en humidit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9quilibre du bois. Dans des conditions normales d\u2019utilisation, comme dans une maison, la teneur en humidit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9quilibre du bois est beaucoup plus basse que la teneur en humidit\u00e9 initiale du bois. Il s\u2019agit d\u2019une des raisons de pourquoi il faut s\u00e9cher le bois d\u2019\u0153uvre avant de le vendre.<\/p>\n<p>Le s\u00e9chage naturel du bois est un processus assez lent. Pour en am\u00e9liorer la productivit\u00e9, plusieurs technologies de s\u00e9choirs industriels ont vu le jour, dont le s\u00e9choir \u00e0 air chaud climatis\u00e9 qui est l\u2019une des plus utilis\u00e9s \u00e0 travers le pays. L\u2019objectif de ce s\u00e9choir est assez simple\u202f: maintenir des conditions hygrom\u00e9triques favorisant un s\u00e9chage rapide. En d\u2019autres termes, on veut contr\u00f4ler la temp\u00e9rature et l\u2019humidit\u00e9 relative \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur du s\u00e9choir. On veut aussi assurer une bonne circulation de l\u2019air afin d\u2019acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer le s\u00e9chage et d\u2019\u00e9vacuer rapidement l\u2019eau \u00e9vapor\u00e9e du bois.<\/p>\n<p>Pour arriver \u00e0 contr\u00f4ler un climat, plusieurs composantes sont n\u00e9cessaires. Premi\u00e8rement, puisque le s\u00e9chage du bois est plus rapide \u00e0 haute temp\u00e9rature, un syst\u00e8me de chauffage est requis. Ce syst\u00e8me de chauffage peut \u00eatre direct ou indirect. Le premier cas est muni d\u2019un br\u00fbleur dans lequel un combustible (biomasse, gaz naturel ou huile) est br\u00fbl\u00e9 pour produire des gaz de combustion chauds. Ces gaz sont achemin\u00e9s directement dans le s\u00e9choir afin d\u2019y r\u00e9chauffer l\u2019air. Il est possible de contr\u00f4ler la quantit\u00e9 de mati\u00e8re br\u00fbl\u00e9e pour r\u00e9duire ou augmenter la temp\u00e9rature des gaz de combustion. Dans le cas du syst\u00e8me de chauffage indirect, un br\u00fbleur est utilis\u00e9 en combinaison avec une chaudi\u00e8re afin de chauffer un fluide (vapeur d\u2019eau, huile thermique). Ce fluide chaud circule ensuite dans des serpentins \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur du s\u00e9choir afin de r\u00e9chauffer l\u2019air en contact avec ceux-ci. Il est possible de contr\u00f4ler la quantit\u00e9 de fluide qui circule dans ces serpentins afin de contr\u00f4ler la vitesse \u00e0 laquelle l\u2019air se r\u00e9chauffe dans le s\u00e9choir.<\/p>\n<p>En s\u00e9chant, le bois fait augmenter l\u2019humidit\u00e9 relative de l\u2019air dans le s\u00e9choir. Sans \u00e9vacuation, l\u2019air se saturerait et le s\u00e9chage du bois arr\u00eaterait compl\u00e8tement. Des composantes sont donc requises afin de contr\u00f4ler l\u2019humidit\u00e9 relative de l\u2019air dans le s\u00e9choir. La premi\u00e8re est la pr\u00e9sence d\u2019\u00e9vents qui s\u2019ouvrent pour \u00e9vacuer l\u2019air chaud et humide du s\u00e9choir et y injecter de l\u2019air frais et plus sec. Des \u00e9changeurs de chaleur sont des syst\u00e8mes compl\u00e9mentaires et optionnels qui permettent de r\u00e9cup\u00e9rer une partie de l\u2019\u00e9nergie \u00e9vacu\u00e9e par les \u00e9vents.<\/p>\n<p>G\u00e9n\u00e9ralement, l\u2019utilisation d\u2019\u00e9vents suffit au contr\u00f4le de l\u2019humidit\u00e9 dans le cas du s\u00e9chage de bois d\u2019\u0153uvre r\u00e9sineux, mais certaines situations exigent l\u2019usage de syst\u00e8me d\u2019humidification lorsque l\u2019humidit\u00e9 relative est trop basse dans le s\u00e9choir. Ceci peut \u00eatre le cas pendant les p\u00e9riodes de conditionnement et d\u2019\u00e9quilibrage qui sont parfois utilis\u00e9es \u00e0 la fin des cycles de s\u00e9chage. Parmi les syst\u00e8mes d\u2019humidification, on retrouve les syst\u00e8mes d\u2019injection de vapeur d\u2019eau et les atomiseurs d\u2019eau qui permettent de projeter de l\u2019eau liquide sous forme de brouillard fin dans le s\u00e9choir. Les syst\u00e8mes d\u2019humidification sont g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement optionnels dans l\u2019industrie du bois d\u2019\u0153uvre r\u00e9sineux.<\/p>\n<p>Finalement, tous les s\u00e9choirs \u00e0 air chaud climatis\u00e9 sont munis d\u2019un syst\u00e8me de ventilation. Sa premi\u00e8re fonction est d\u2019assurer un climat uniforme \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur du s\u00e9choir. Sa deuxi\u00e8me est de favoriser un s\u00e9chage rapide du bois. En effet, plus l\u2019air circule rapidement \u00e0 la surface du bois, plus l\u2019\u00e9change d\u2019eau entre le bois et l\u2019air est efficace. Ceci est particuli\u00e8rement vrai lorsque la teneur en humidit\u00e9 du bois est au-dessus du point de saturation des fibres, soit aux alentours de 30% d\u2019humidit\u00e9. Les ventilateurs peuvent \u00eatre configur\u00e9s transversalement ou longitudinalement, \u00e0 simple ou double passe, mais leurs fonctions principales demeurent les m\u00eames dans tous les cas.<\/p>\n<p>Tous ces syst\u00e8mes jumel\u00e9s \u00e0 un ordinateur ou un contr\u00f4leur programmable permettent de contr\u00f4ler les conditions dans le s\u00e9choir pendant un temps de s\u00e9chage voulu. \u00c0 ce stade, il est important de se rappeler que les conditions \u00e0 maintenir dans le s\u00e9choir ne sont pas arbitraires. Le choix des conditions de s\u00e9chage est le r\u00e9sultat d\u2019un compromis entre productivit\u00e9 et qualit\u00e9. Le s\u00e9choir n\u2019est que le moyen, la machine pour arriver \u00e0 nos fins. Il est donc tr\u00e8s important de monitorer son fonctionnement afin de s\u2019assurer que ses diff\u00e9rentes composantes sont en contr\u00f4le.
